At Geek Strength we believe that the best form follows function, not the other way around. Like the strongmen of times past, we are interested in cultivating STRENGTH, rather than only the APPEARANCE OF STRENGTH.
Modern gyms focus on appearance to a fault, lining the walls with mirrors, and using a huge variety of machines to pad, constrain, and support the body while attempting to isolate muscles for cosmetic "pump" training. The result is weakness in key portions of the body not viewable in the mirror, uncoordinated movement, and strength gain so limited and untransferable to real life that it hardly deserves to be called strength training.
The promulgation of machines in modern gyms is the result of a high-capital, low-concept business model. It is designed around the assumption that most gym members will not actually train, and when they do, they will train by themselves, with zero coaching.
Geek Strength takes the opposite approach. in Edison, New Jersey, Jon is dedicated to delivering this old-school style of training to his clients, because of its proven effectiveness.
Jon has earned the comprehensive coach certificate for Mark Rippetoe's Starting Strength
method, featured in the excellent book, "Starting Strength". This no-nonsense approach uses five key big barbell lifts: squat, deadlift, press, bench press, and power clean to elicit rapid gains in strength and functional size in the dedicated client. Although many people fear lifting heavy, with proper coaching these potent lifts are key to fully unleashing one's latent physical potential.
Jon is certified in Josh Henkin's Loaded Integrated Functional Training (L.I.F.T.) methods, using sandbags and other tools to create training effects not possible with barbells alone.
As a USA Weightlifting
(USAW) Sports Performance Coach, Jon is qualified and equipped to teach the olympic-style competition lifts (snatch, clean, and jerk), the most potent power building lifts known to mankind.
